Fire. Imagine if we didn’t have fire – we’d have no cooked food, no brick houses, no cars, no computers, no electricity, no lights, no steel, the list is endless! Fire underpins almost every other human discovery.

I’m going to give a maths spin on this and say my favourite discovery was the number 0. It took centuries for people to accept that 0 was a number because for many people maths represented real things. How can zero be something real when it represents that fact that there is nothing.
Now there is no way that we could do maths or science without the number 0. We take the number zero for granted now but it wasn’t always considered a number.

Hard to tell, but I’d say the observation that the Earth goes around the sun instead of the other way around. It’s hard for us to imagine now, but it must have been such a complete change in how you see the world and your place in it. Terrifying and exciting at the same time.
