• Question: If the ferrosilicon method was forgotten, could that not be an indication that people have tried and failed?

      Well, it definitely works on a big scale. I think the reason why people haven’t tried it is that it’s quite hard to get hold of in small amounts – chemists like to use chemicals they can buy easily from chemical companies, and ferrosilicon is not one of those – you have to get it in 250 kg barrels, which is a bit much for the laboratory…
