      The colour in our hair comes from pigment cells in our hair follicles (the tube of tissue beneath the skin that surrounds each hair). As we get older, these pigment cells gradually die. This means that our hairs contain less pigment; it is the pigment that gives our hair colour, so the less pigment in the hair, the lighter the hair looks, and thus our hair goes grey as we get older.
