For me it’s being independent and being able to support myself. When I was at university to was really important to me to become independent and stand on my own two feet. I’ll always have my family and friends, and can ask them for help and support when I need them but until then I’m in charge.

To be honest, when I read your question, the first thing that popped into my head was ‘Having a good marriage.’ (sorry, feminist Martha …) I assume my husband would agree. 🙂 It’s really cool to understand and support how the other person is different from you – kind of like being each other’s favourite science project. :]
In terms of career, I was very proud when I got my Ph.D. at 26. For the German university system, that’s about three years early. And like Hannah, being able to support myself through my studies with scholarships was important to me too.

I entered a science communication competition called FameLab. I didn’t expect to go far but I was one of the runner ups in the UK final. Here is a video of it. I was talking about how maths was used to show how Facebook could lose up to 80% of its users by 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NHTSkdkZVg

I think I’d probably say getting married and having children. Science is awesome, but it can’t beat family.
