Some artists are inspired by science and create artwork around scientific concepts. Sometimes these can be in a practical way to help others understand something, or they can be more abstract way to get people to think about something in a new way.
My work has been the other way round, I’m interested in how scientific knowledge can enhance art/artists/performers. This could be medically, for better physical or mental performance, or can be for general health. So for example, children who have coloured playgrounds with artwork painted on the ground are more physically active and fit than those who don’t.
Personally, I was never able to choose between ‘art’ or ‘science’ so I’ve always done things that have a bit of both. 🙂
I totally agree with Alison and just wanted to add that art/music has helped me a lot with my science as well. It’s really difficult to find good ways of describing complicated systems like the brain, where all neurons influence each other all the time. So thinking of it e.g. as a sculpture or a piece of music has helped me come up with analyses that better explain my data.
